That's the message and purpose of the NASA Bus Safety Initiative, which was launched in County Galway on Friday, the 8th of September in Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, Claregalway.
The NASA Bus Safety Initiative has been developed by an inter-agency group consisting of representatives from the HSE, An Garda Síochána, the WRDATF and the RSA and it aims to highlight and promote young people’s safety when using private hire buses for travelling to and from events.
Underage drinking, both before, and on the way to, junior discos and events, has become an increasing problem for parents, for bus operators, for An Garda Síochána and other public bodies such as our paramedic, ambulance and hospital services; and of course for our young people themselves.
NASA contains a voluntary code of safety guidelines that participating bus operators observe. Under these guidelines, bus operators manage bookings in a manner which promotes the safety of young people. Amongst the key components of this voluntary code is the undertaking that operators will only accept bookings from persons over 18 years of age and liaise with An Garda Síochána in relation to pick up points and destinations. This is to ensure adequate supervision and to help prevention of underage drinking. The overarching purpose of the initiative is to assist bus operators to work according to best practice and to create an environment where young people can travel to events in a safe and comfortable environment.
In return for their commitment to this best practice and observance of child protection guidelines, the NASA bus operators will be promoted as the operators of choice for the agencies that are bringing young people to events; such as schools, youth and sports organisations.
To date, eight Galway-based bus operators have signed up to the NASA voluntary code and have participated in child protection training earlier this year. These operators are:

Youth Party Guidelines
The NASA Bus Safety Initiative is being supported by venues in the region that organise underage events. These venues are also encouraged to refer to the Youth Party Guidelines. This set of guidelines for organising events for young people has been developed by a coalition of organisations comprising the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board, Jigsaw Galway, An Garda Síochána and Tusla, Child and Family Agency with support from the Galway and Roscommon Children and Young People’s Services Committees. The guidelines can be downloaded from the Galway or Roscommon pages of www.cypsc.ie.
